La mácula es la parte de la retina que distingue los detalles finos en el centro del campo visual. La degeneración macular es el resultado de una descomposición parcial de la capa aislante entre la retina y la capa coroide de vasos sanguíneos detrás de la retina. La degeneración macular causa únicamente la pérdida de la visión central.
